2007 Black Hat: Day 3
Learned some very interesting tidbits about Windows vs. Linux today which reinforces my previous thoughts that Windows get a seriously bad rap:
“With linux becoming easier, more people with less skill are getting into it
- The old adage about Linux users being more security minded is no longer very true
- Linux machines make juicy targets
- Windows has a much more complex, monolithic codebasethan most linuxsystem
- Linux is a kernel. Windows is an entire integrated OS. This presents a larger attack surface
- Windows is the most widely used operating system in the world. This means more eyes looking. Higher profile target
- Writing exploits for Windows however, is somewhat more difficult than Linux”
Aside from this, today was very long. Looking forward to the final day tomorrow of training. These 12 hour class training days are killer but extremely beneficial while being in Vegas doesn’t hurt.
